Manifesto of Care and Discomfort

One aspect of queer ecology is the challenging of hierarchies that prioritise human beings. Our homes are a physical space in which our beliefs in human exceptionalism are enacted. We want a home that is pure, clean, or free from ‘unwanted’ beings that pose no risk to us beyond discomfort. This project asks what it would look like to see the non-humans we share domestic spaces with as our equals. What might this new way of moving through our homes teach us about how we treat those in our communities we deem a ‘nuisance’?

This project included both a publication and an installation, all created through a combination of dye painting, gouache, monoprint and screen print. This was the final research project conducted for my MA Illustration.
